Pets
in our Neighborhood Jake
Jake is
a yellow lab owned by the Blair family. He has taken obedience and agility
classes by Dana Stillinger, Jake didn’t like agility classes much, and it was
hard for him to do some of the tricks. Jake LOVES to go backpacking with Mr.
Blair, Jake has been going on backpacking trips with his owner since he was a
puppy. Jake is 10 now and a great pal, they hope he will be able to go
backpacking this year since he is slowing down. Killer
Goose/Dumbo Killer Goose is not a kind of goose; it
is a well-deserved name for the Hyde family’s goose. Although it is sometimes
called Dumbo it is more often called Killer Goose. Alice (one of the Hyde
daughters) is often scared to go into the garden without a baseball bat. Once
in attempt to keep thr goose from biting her, Alice threw the chicken feed
she was going to give to the chickens on the goose’s head. The Hyde family
still has a few years until this animal leaves their house because he is only
3 years now. Annie Annie is a Lhasa Apsos owned by the
Munger family, she weighs 14 pounds and is 3 years old. Annie has never been
on a walk ever since she was groomed the first time… they groomed her so she
didn’t have any hair. She looked in mirror and didn’t like what she saw, so
she never goes on walks afraid that she might be seen. She just stops in the
driveway and will not move. Other than her one little flaw, Annie is a great
dog. Lhasa Apsos were bred as watchdogs in China, so Annie lets them know
when anything passes by the window. More Pets on Next page! Murphy Murphy is the newest member in the La
Mont household. He is 5 months old; taking puppy obedience classes and is a
Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Murphy is lively little puppy that loves people. He loves to eat anything, carrots
especially. If you blow bubbles he does a little jig. Murphy is a great dog.
He loves people and dogs. Look Forward to more neighborhood pet
stories next week! Artwork by Claire |

Gardening Tips
|
Manure Don't use dog or cat manure. These manures often carry diseases that can be spread to children. Never use fresh manure, since it contains soluble nitrogen compounds and ammonia that can burn plants and interfere with seed germination. Manure that is well composted or has aged for about six months is best. When added to the compost pile, manure will speed the composting process. Manure tea can be used for periodic feedings or diluted and used every time you water. Do not allow undiluted manure tea to come into direct contact with foliage. To make manure tea, simply place a shovel or two of manure in a large container filled with water, and after a week or so, strain out the manure. To make the straining process a little easier, you can tie the manure in a burlap bag before placing it in the water. Horse manure may contain a good many weed seeds, so compost it in a hot compost pile before adding it to your garden. |
Skunk Control If you wake up to a lawn full of holes with bits of turf tossed around here and there, you probably have skunks visiting in the night. In spring beetle grubs are close to the surface of the lawn, making an easy meal for hungry skunks. The best way to get rid of the skunks is to get rid of the grubs. Try applying milky spore disease to your lawn. This disease is harmless to humans, pets and wildlife but fatal to grubs. |
